Naomi awoke to the sound of voices, one of which sounded like Miri’s, the other, a deep masculine drone. At first she assumed that it was Malcolm, but when she opened the door to her Juliet balcony and looked out, she saw him. Quinn, standing only a few feet below her. For some unknown reason, he was about to enter Miri’s apartment.

He looked up at her briefly and let out a sheepish grin before disappearing from sight. Naomi turned away, cursing herself for looking. No doubt he’s come for a refund from the dating service, she thought. Or to find someone else. But no. That conflicted with what she’d suspected the previous night—if he’d gone home with the pretty young thing, why would he be seeking someone else to date, particularly this early in the morning?

None of it made sense, and she threw herself back on the bed, tempted to rock it violently back and forth in order to create the illusion from downstairs that she too had met someone the previous night, and that she was currently engaged in some hot sex.

“He wouldn’t believe it anyhow,” she muttered. “With that nose, he’d know that I’m alone.”

No doubt he knew how miserable she was, too. Misery had its own smell, after all.
